The George Hathersage closed on Friday, October 20, 2023 following damage incurred due to the unprecedented floods as a result of Storm Babet.

After a week of assessments, electrical and gas testing and uncovering the water damage, we have been left in the heartbreaking position of having to close for an expected period of 4-6 months. This will allow us adequate time for everything to dry out, electrics to be tested and restored in places, gas supply to be tested and plumbing adjustments made along with an extensive amount of appliances, fixtures and furnishings that need replacing.

With the damage taking this long to put right, we are left in a position where we will not be able to open over the Christmas period.

However, I’d love to remind you that our sister venue The Maynard is open and ready to welcome you with open arms.

We have the following festive events planned at The Maynard which are open and available to book now;

I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank the hard-working teams at both The George and The Maynard who not only helped in the deluge, but got on the phones, reallocated guests and have been exceptional in their response.

At Longbow Bars and Restaurants, we are committed to putting people over profits and all staff will be retained despite the closure of The George. We are incredibly grateful for the support of the staff who have agreed to reduced hours on the same pay, some on a flexi furlough scheme and some looking for additional work elsewhere but vowing to return full time when we open. We want to be here for our team through this time and support their overall wellbeing, ensuring they have security and clarity during this closure period.

The proposed restoration and opening of The Ashford Arms will continue as planned with many of The George staff able to assist in the development of training, new processes and project management.

Thank you to our customers for your continued love and support. We have had so many supportive messages across all our social media channels and it has touched us. We are incredibly grateful we are insured as a business for flood damage meaning we can put this right.

Our hearts also go out to the other businesses and people across the Peak District and beyond who have been affected by Storm Babet.

Thank you for your continued support.

See you in The Maynard!

Rob Hattersley

Statement From The George Hathersage

Unfortunately due to flooding, The George Hathersage is completely closed to hotel guests, restaurant bookings and bar visitors.

The storm and heavy rain have caused extensive flooding to the cellar, kitchen, ground floor bedrooms, bar and restaurant. For the health and safety of our guests and staff we have no other option but to stay closed until further notice.

Flood specialists will join us on site tomorrow to pump out the last of the water. We will then undergo a deep clean, sanitation testing, gas and electric safety testing and be able to assess the damage and a strategy to repair and reopen as quickly as possible.

As you can imagine, my team and I are utterly heartbroken and we do not want to disappoint guests. Our team at The Maynard are calling all guests of The George to accommodate and facilitate restaurant bookings where possible. We are informing all hotel guests that we are closed with no alternative accommodation available this weekend as The Maynard is fully booked.

We will come back to you after the weekend with an update on the state of play. At this moment we are extremely sorry for the disappointment caused by our closure.

Thank you for your understanding,
