If you've spent the day walking the edges or simply wandering through Hathersage, there's no better place to unwind than The George's courtyard.

Sheltered, south-facing and genuinely sun-trapped, it's the kind of spot that earns its reputation the moment you sit down.

A proper outdoor spot in the Peak District

Outdoor dining in the Peak District can be a bit of a lottery, but the courtyard at The George is one of those rare finds that actually delivers.

Whether you're looking for a long, lazy lunch or a cold drink as the evening light fades over the hills, it's a space that feels made for long summer afternoons.

Food and drink worth sitting outside for

Our kitchen makes the most of local produce from across Derbyshire and the wider Peak District, so the menu reflects the season and the landscape around us.

From light bites to full evening dining, there's something to suit however hungry you arrive.

Our drinks list is equally well-considered, whether that's a chilled glass of something crisp or something a little more indulgent to mark the end of a good day out.

Getting here

The George sits right in the heart of Hathersage and we have our own car park on site with EV charging available, so the practicalities are taken care of before you even arrive.

The courtyard fills up quickly on sunny days, so we'd always recommend booking ahead.

Reserve your table here and make a proper afternoon of it.

The Peak District has no shortage of places to escape to, but some destinations just have a little something extra. Hathersage is one of them.

Tucked into the Hope Valley with dramatic moorland rising around it, this is a village that genuinely rewards a proper visit. Great food, incredible walks, a historic open-air lido and an inn at its centre that has been welcoming guests for centuries.

If you’ve been looking for a reason to finally book that Peak District weekend away, consider this it.

Hathersage named one of the UK’s Best Places to Live (and Visit)

Hathersage has been officially recognised as one of the best places in the country. The Sunday Times Best Places to Live 2026 put Hathersage on its prestigious list of 72 top UK locations.

Judges praised it for offering “the best of both worlds”, being close enough to Sheffield for city convenience, yet within easy reach of some of the Peak District’s finest scenery.

That combination of accessibility and genuine countryside beauty is exactly what makes Hathersage such a brilliant base for a weekend break. You’re arriving somewhere vibrant, welcoming and full of character.

The village has a wonderfully independent spirit. Wander the high street and you’ll find brilliant local businesses and that unmistakable sense that this is a community people are proud of.

There’s also David Mellor, the iconic design shop and museum that has become something of a pilgrimage site for lovers of good craft and beautiful objects.

And then there’s the lido. Hathersage’s 30-metre outdoor swimming pool, built in 1936 and open all year round, is heated to 25°C even through winter. Whether you take a dip first thing in the morning or treat it as an afternoon adventure, it’s one of those experiences that makes a stay in Hathersage feel truly special.

Walks, views and adventures right on the doorstep

The Peak District needs little introduction, but Hathersage places you right in the thick of it.

We highly recommend a walk to Stanage Edge, offering breathtaking views over the Hope Valley. It’s just one of countless routes you can step out onto directly from the village. Whether you’re an experienced hiker ticking off the big ridges or simply looking for a gentle afternoon stroll through gorgeous countryside, you’ll find something perfectly suited to your pace.

Further afield, some of the Peak District’s best bits are all within easy reach. Chatsworth House, Bakewell, Mam Tor and Padley Gorge are all on the doorstep, making it easy to pack a weekend with memorable experiences without ever spending too long in the car.

Some mornings deserve more than a hurried coffee. Start yours with a proper breakfast at The George and step outside into the Derbyshire air.

You don’t have to travel far from The George to find something worth visiting.

Starting almost from our front door, the Fairy Woods Walk heads into ancient beech woodland, passes Little John's grave and crosses over streams as you make your way through one of the quieter corners of the valley. The path meanders at its own pace and you should too.

Look out for the stone doorway that announces the entrance to the woodland section. It has become one of the most photographed spots on the route, and it is easy to see why.

At around two miles long, taking 30 to 45 minutes at a relaxed pace, it is one of those walks that fits easily into a morning without taking over the day. If you have the appetite for more, heading north from the trail brings you up to Stanage Edge.

One of the Peak District's most iconic landmarks, the gritstone escarpment rewards the extra effort with views that are extraordinary in any light. Whether you visit at sunrise, sunset or under a clear night sky, they are the kind that stay with you.

Fuel up first

Walking on an empty stomach is a choice, but not one we would recommend.

Before setting off or when you return, a breakfast at The George is worth making time for.

That means classic cooked breakfasts done properly, local Derbyshire oatcakes, your choice of breakfast muffins and lighter continental options for those who prefer a gentler start. Whatever kind of morning you are having, there is something on the menu that fits.

21st April marks the birthday of one of England's greatest novelists. Her connection to The George runs deeper than most people realise.

In the summer of 1845, Charlotte Brontë spent three weeks in Hathersage visiting her close friend Ellen Nussey, whose brother had recently become the local vicar. She stayed, she walked the valley and she took in North Lees Hall, the 16th-century manor just outside the village that most scholars agree became Thornfield Hall in Jane Eyre. The hall had been home to the Eyre family, whose name Charlotte gave to her protagonist. The village itself became “Morton,” named after the landlord of the local inn.

That inn was The George. Charlotte is believed to have stayed here and the George Inn appears by name in Jane Eyre. Nearly 180 years on, we are still here and still very much worth a visit.

Tucked into a quiet corner of The George, our little literary nook is the kind of spot that is hard to leave. It feels fitting that a hotel with Charlotte Brontë's name above one of its doors should have somewhere like this. Fresh seasons call for fresh flavours. At The George, we are delighted to welcome our new Winter and Spring menus from Wednesday 21 January.

Crafted by our executive chef Adrian Gagea, these dishes celebrate comforting classics, vibrant seasonal ingredients and thoughtful twists that make every visit feel like a treat.

It is the perfect excuse to book a table, settle in and enjoy a relaxed meal in the heart of the Peak District.

New year, new flavours

A new season always brings a fresh burst of creativity in our kitchen.

This time, Adrian has blended inventive new dishes with the much loved favourites that regulars would never forgive us for removing. The result is a menu that feels both reassuring and exciting, rooted in classic pub dining yet lifted with modern touches.

Our menus are inspired by the produce we receive from trusted local suppliers, so what you see on the plate reflects what is at its best right now.

Think vibrant greens, rich sauces, slow cooked meats and desserts that strike the perfect balance between indulgent and light.

Highlights from the new menu

Starters to set the tone

There is citrus cured salmon with dill and horseradish cream cheese mousse, served with a crisp spring salad for a bright, elegant beginning.

For something heartier, the pork, rum and caramelised onion scotch egg comes with burnt apple purée and slaw, a proper pub classic with a refined edge.

Seafood lovers will be tempted by the white crab ballotine, served with a bouillabaisse style sauce, brown crab butter, toasted sourdough, crispy whitebait and pea shoots, a dish that feels both coastal and comforting.

Mains to look forward to

The orzo salad with grilled tenderstem broccoli and asparagus, pickled radishes and sun dried tomatoes is light yet satisfying, with the option to add grilled rump steak, buttermilk chicken, roasted Jerusalem artichoke or citrus cured salmon.

Nestled in the heart of the Peak District, Hathersage is a charming village brimming with history, scenic walks and hidden gems. Whether you’re visiting for the day or staying nearby, there are plenty of free experiences to enjoy.

Here are five activities we recommend that will help you explore the area while keeping your wallet happy.

1. Wander the enchanting fairy woods walk

The Fairy Woods Walk is a short circular trail starting from Hathersage village, perfect for a gentle stroll or a quick escape into nature. The path meanders through ancient beech woodland and follows a babbling stream, creating an almost magical atmosphere.

Don’t miss the quirky stone doorway marking the entrance to the woodland section, it’s a favourite photo spot for visitors.

The walk is around 2 miles and takes 30–45 minutes, making it suitable for most fitness levels. You can also extend your adventure northwards to explore Stanage Edge, ideal for panoramic views, breathtaking sunsets or even stargazing.

Find out more about the walk here.

2. Explore the David Mellor design museum

Hathersage is home to the David Mellor design museum, celebrating the work of one of Britain’s most influential designers. Entry is free, although tours of the iconic round factory building require tickets. Visitors can explore renowned cutlery, homeware and design pieces spanning decades, including Mellor’s modern traffic light designs.

The museum provides fascinating insight into the creative process, from sketches to finished products. The building itself is a striking example of modern architecture, thoughtfully designed to blend with the Peak District landscape. This stop is perfect for design enthusiasts, creatives and anyone curious about British craftsmanship.

3. Take the Hathersage to Grindleford Circular Walk

For a those looking to stretch their legs a little further with a longer outdoor adventure, the Hathersage to Grindleford circular walk is a must. The route takes you through open countryside, along the River Derwent, past rolling fields and woodland paths. Keep your eyes peeled for local wildlife and enjoy panoramic views of the Peak District.

Once you reach Grindleford, why not stop at our sister venue, The Maynard, for a refreshing drink or a light bite. The loop then brings you back to Hathersage, offering a full day of scenic exploration for walkers who enjoy longer trails.
