New Wine Menu at The Maynard and The George Hathersage

VISITING THE ITALIAN VINEYARDS

Ahead of the launch of our brand new wine list, a number of us from The Maynard and The George headed to Italy on a very important work trip.

This is definitely one of the highlights of being in the hospitality business and taking the team to the stunning scenery of the Piemonte region was an honour and a privilege.

We take sourcing our ingredients very seriously at Longbow Bars and Restaurants and always work with local producers where possible. You can read more about our commitment to Peak District produce here.

Myself (Rob), Steve, Adrian, Charlotte and Josh were overwhelmed by the welcome we received at the vineyards we visited. We were able to see exactly where many of our wines including our house wines come from.

We learned about the landscape and the ecosystem of each vineyard, witnessed all aspects of production, and then, of course, that all-important tasting!

One thing that surprised us was the reason why many of our wines are organic but not marketed as so. As relatively young family-run wineries, the children play in the vineyards. So chemicals and pesticides are never used. Organic isn’t a word they wanted to use in promoting their wines but I loved how their own beliefs and values on what felt right for production influenced their product.

OUR RECOMMENDATION – BARBARESCO RONCAGLIE

PODERI COLLA, ITALY (ABV 14.5%)

As a direct result of tasting these fine wines on our trip, and at the request of many customers, we decided to include some of the more rare wines onto our winter menu.

The Barbaresco is real treat and we are delighted to have imported such a celebrated wine to the Peak District thanks to Hattersley Wines in Bakewell.

The Barbaresco’s bouquet shows typical rose nuances as well as layers of spice and woodland fruits. Full-bodied with hints of cherry, dark chocolate, and prunes with a firm sweet tannin on the finish. It really is spectacular.

Our new wine menu launches on October 31st.
