We love local

Crafted by Raymond Blanc-trained Executive Chef, Adrian Gagea, and our very own Head Chef, James Heywood, this menu brings together the best of local sourcing and global inspiration.

From sustainably caught seafood from our fishmonger, RG Morris based in Buxton and tender Derbyshire lamb from Ginger Butchers in Bakewell to vibrant Peak District vegetables picked and supplied by Winter Foods in Chesterfield, we are passionate about Peak District produce.

Dining al fresco

As the warmer months are welcomed, new fresh seasonal flavours are best enjoyed in the sunshine. We have comfortable booth and table seating in our courtyard.

While we don’t take outdoor bookings as such, please do let us know when you book online that you’d like to dine outside and we will do our best to accommodate you.

Internationally inspired flavours

Our team at The George are always inspired by global flavours and for this new menu at The George, there are many interesting flavoursome dishes that take inspiration from other countries.

We’re expecting the pan-fried duck breast to be a hit, served with sweet potato and lime purée, grilled orange segments, pak choi, and a red wine duck sauce.

Mediterranean-inspired mussels and calamari are served in a rich marinara sauce with warm focaccia and skinny fries, and the Asian influence is evident in the sweet & sour pork ribs, which come with the more American sides of coleslaw, skinny fries and grilled corn on the cob.

Pub classics

Let’s not forget what we are famous for at The George! Our pub classics are always a hit, like our burgers handmade using only the finest ingredients, served in a pretzel bun with tomato jam, triple-cooked chips, garlic mayonnaise with carrot, cabbage and red onion slaw. Choose from Derbyshire venison, cheese and chorizo burger with homemade apple and quince chutney, or sink your teeth into The Longbow signature burger, with bbq beef brisket and double cheese. Handmade using only the best cuts of locally sourced beef from New Close Farm, Over Haddon.

Our pizzas are prepared and cooked on site in our wood-fired pizza oven. For this new menu, sample the new pizzas; mortadella salami, pistachio and burrata, quattro formagio, seafood arrabiata or the summer garden pizza. All our pizzas can be made gluten-free and they are available to take away too.

Delicious Desserts

Don’t swerve desserts at The George, not when they’re handmade and so good!

Longbow Venues Group Executive Chef, Adrian Gagea said, “The Vegan blueberry cheesecake, with strawberry compote and mango sorbet is a must-try. It’s plant-based, gluten-free and packed with natural flavours. The bright purple colour is always good fun too!”

Another dessert to try is the Mojito & Gin Tart because this one is our charity dessert. We will donate £1 towards the Ruth Strauss Foundation. 

Something for everyone

We take accessible dining very seriously at The George and as we make everything in-house and from scratch, 90% of our menu can be adapted to be gluten-free without losing taste and texture.

Vegan and vegetarian dishes are also thoughtfully created with those following a plant-based diet in mind. From this new seasonal menu, enjoy the spiced oyster-mushrooms with butterbean pureé, the plant-based goddess salad or the summer garden pizza.

Easter at Chatsworth House

A visit to Chatsworth House is always a magical experience, and this Easter, it’s filled with fun activities including creative workshops in water marbling, paint blowing, and spring crafts, a family trail and Pinetum play area for outdoor adventure and fossil spotting, animal encounters with guinea pigs, chicks, and farmyard animals, and Easter egg hunts from the 18th to the 21st of April.

Easter Egg-Stravaganza at Thornbridge Hall

From the 7th to the 21st of April, Thornbridge Hall is hosting an Easter Fun Zone with games, crafts, and a film club. Kids can also enjoy an Easter egg hunt around the gardens.

Special workshops include a Lego printing workshop on the 11th of April and a Posca pen workshop on the 14th of April, where children can create their own designs with acrylic paint markers.

Both workshops include garden access for one child and one adult, priced at £20 per child.

Easter at Matlock Farm Park

From the 5th to the 21st of April, Matlock Farm Park is celebrating Easter with bottle-feeding cade lambs, an Easter Treasure Trail with mini prizes, animal encounters, pony rides, wallaby encounters, and sheep, ferret, and meerkat racing.

Over the Easter weekend, families can enjoy even more activities.

Dinosaur Fun Day – Good Friday (18th April)
On Good Friday Dinosaur Fun Day features Rita the T-Rex and an interactive dinosaur dig experience.

The Big Bubbleman – Easter Sunday (20th April)
On Easter Sunday The Big Bubbleman will put on a spectacular bubble show with giant and colourful bubbles.

Tickets start at £16.50 for children and £18.50 for adults. There are discounts for families of 4 or 5, NHS or Armed Forces workers and senior citizens. Under 2s go free.

On Easter Sunday, the 20th of April, Peak Village is hosting a special Alice in Wonderland Easter Fun Day with storytelling, crafts, and a themed Easter trail.

Whipped Feta & Pumpkin Mousse Starter

'I'd urge people to try the whipped feta and pumpkin mousse. We're really proud of the vegetarian dishes we do at The George and this one is a must.'

'You've got the tang and creaminess of the whipped feta that blends so well with the smooth, earthy flavours of pumpkin in the mousse. When you pair it with golden toasted sourdough and honey-baked walnuts, it's perfect.'

Beef Short Ribs Main Course

'I'm a big fan of the beef short ribs. Glazed with pomegranate molasses and served with colcannon mashed potatoes, confit Chantenay carrots, and a red wine jus. It's proper indulgence on a plate. I'd have this every day if I could!'

We’re 23 weeks into January (or it certainly feels like it!) and rather than slip into a slumber of winter blues, how about some FREE things you can do locally to perk you up?

1) Wander Around Hathersage Village

If your bank balance won’t stretch to a January shopping spree, how about a little mooch, historical tour on foot or some window shopping?

There’s so much rich architecture and history to be found in Hathersage. The village is warm and welcoming with traditional quaint stone cottages, shops and cafes. Plus, of course, the historical pub and inn The George Hathersage. Since 2021 we’ve been the proud custodians of this 800 year old heritage building of significant historical and literary importance. Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre features The George and it is believed she stayed here when visiting Hathersage, taking inspiration for her world-renowned classic novel.

2) Visit St Michael and All Angels Church

Wander through the traditional wooden gateway, view the impressive tower and wander the historic graveyard at this 14th century church. It’s also supposed to be the resting place of Little John, Robin Hood’s loyal friend. Can you find his gravestone? (Please tread carefully and be mindful of this sensitive resting place for many).

3) Pass By North Lees Hall

North Lees Hall is the inspiration for Thornfield Hall in Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre. This is a private residence so no public tours are available and the hall is situated in private grounds. However, popular walking routes to Stanage Edge do pass this beautiful Elizabethan 16th century tower house which you can view from the public footpath. 

4) Walk to Surprise View

Prepare to be, well, pleasantly surprised! Surprise View is aptly named for the amazing vantage point near Hathersage noted for stunning panormas and breathtaking scenery.

Take in the Hope Valley, see Stanage Edge, look towards Mam Tor and Lose Hill on a clear day and notice Derwent Valley with the reservoirs and woodland stretching into the distance.

It is a dream for photographers and also an excellent spot for stargazing due to low light pollution but care needs to be taken when walking in the dark.

The views are striking in misty conditions with the clouds looking like a soft blanket over the valleys below.

You can walk to Surprise View via a variety of routes or you can park in the designated car park (payable via the RinGo app) just off the A6187 near the viewpoint.

Please note there are no toilet facilities and while the main viewing area is close to the car park, the terrain is not suitable for wheelchairs and prams.

5) Do The Hathersage Heritage Trail

If you’re a literature or film lover, this self guided walk around the village takes in places visited by Charlotte Bronte that appear in Jane Eyre. You could also recreate famous scenes from Pride and Prejudice on location at Stanage Edge. This walk also takes in the grave of Little John in St Michael’s church as mentioned earlier. There’s also a Norman fort and breathtaking moors to explore on the way.

We know that when you need to eat in line with your dietary needs for clinical or faith reasons, it is important to find good quality restaurants that understand this need.

Rob Hattersley, managing director of Longbow Venues is coeliac himself. As such, our chefs have become gluten-free gurus when it comes to culinary creations. After all, they want to impress the boss! 

They work really hard to create dishes that can be adapted to be gluten-free without losing that all-important taste and texture while sourcing ingredients locally. 

Lactose-Free and Plant-Based

Our menu adaptations are not limited to gluten-free dishes. We are able to adapt many dishes to be lactose-free/dairy free. We’re also proud of our vegan and vegetarian offerings, which showcase our chefs’ creativity and commitment to flavour. Oh it's emosh central here today at The George Hathersage. We're officially back open! After 8 long, upsetting and heartbreaking months while we dried out, recovered and renovated following flood damage it feels so good to be back open.

We'll Be Back Open in June

If you're new here and missed the drama that unfolded on Friday, October 20, 2023, The George Hathersage became a victim of the floods caused by Storm Babet.

A number of homes and businesses were flooded in the storm in Hathersage and unfortunately, we took the hit pretty badly. So badly that we had to close to 'dry out' for a number of months before work could begin to restore our beautiful, historical legendary local.

We'll Be Back, and Better Than Ever!

Here's some pics that were taken on Thursday (25th April) to show the progress that is steadily being made.

We've got plastered walls drying, first fix of the plumbing and electrics has been completed and we've made a start on the joinery.

The interior design is being expertly created by Jess, the designer from Concorde BGW. Concorde did such a good job on the bedrooms at The Ashford Arms which opened last month so we had to get them to help with The George. When it comes to the interior design, expect bold colours, striking prints and the quirks that The George is famous for.

“Can we put the exact date?” we asked.

“I'd rather not. I don't want to jinx it and then us look like muppets if something delays it.” said Rob, in his trademark tell-it-like-it-is style!

30 Years of Hurt? More Like 57!

It was Baddiel and Skinner who sang the original version of Three Lions and talked about '30 years of hurt' since England brought home the world cup in 1966.

We still sing the song, but it's been a lot longer than 30 years. Try 57 years since England were in a World Cup final. Now the Lionesses have a chance to do what hasn't been done for almost 6 decades.
